“How much are average salaries in Malaysia?” is a question that every working adult wonders.
Recently, the Department Of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) released research about the salary in Malaysia. We have outlined the 10 facts from the report.

10 Interesting Facts about average salaries in Malaysia
1. A total of 9.7 million recipients of monthly wages in 2021.
In 2021, the number of salaries & wages recipients rose by 3.4 percent to a record of 9.7 million persons (2020: +2.1%; 9.4 million persons).
In the meantime, the median monthly salaries & wages increased by 9.1 percent to RM2,250 compared to the previous year (2020: -15.6%; RM2,062).
2. Median monthly salaries & wages rose 9.1 % in 2021.
In 2021, the median of monthly salaries & wages was RM2250, but it s still less than in 2019, as it had a sharp drop in 2020.

3. On average, males were paid higher than females.
The average female salary was 4% lower than the average male salary. Furthermore, the Median of female salaries was 7% lower than males.
4. 15-24-year-olds were paid lower than the overall mean.
25-34 years old group average wages were 12% lower than the overall average. Specifically, the average wages (RM1,659) for this age group were 45% smaller than the overall mean (RM3,037).
5. Skilled category recorded the highest increase.
Their average salary was RM 4,848. Meanwhile, the median was equivalent to RM 4,471. Semi-skilled workers’ average salary (RM 2,064) was 57% lower than skilled ones.
6. Higher salaries for those with tertiary education.
The salaries of people with higher education were 63% higher than the salaries of people with primary education salaries.
To break it down:
RM 1,584 / RM 4,239 = 0.37
100% – 37% = 63%
7. Urban districts show higher average monthly salaries.
People were making, on average, 32% more than in rural areas, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).
8. Mining & Quarrying sector ranked the highest.
The mining and quarrying field recorded the highest average monthly salary. This was followed by the Services sector (65% higher than the Agriculture sector).
9. States with the highest monthly average.
Kuala Lumpur and W.P Putrajaya recorded the highest average monthly salary and wages.
10. States that exceeded the national bar of average salary.
As shown above, a total of 6 states exceeded the national level of average monthly salaries.
The average salary increase per annum in Malaysia is 6%. Although, it can fluctuate based on factors like industry and experience.
What is the minimum wage in Malaysia?
According to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, employers have been urged to adhere to the RM1,500 minimum wage standards that have been in effect since May 1 to protect Malaysians’ welfare.
The order applies to all employees except domestic servants. There is a temporary exemption for employers who employ less than 5 employees until 31 December 2022. However, the such exemption does not apply to employers who carry out professional activities.
