What Is Rumah Aman
Rumah Aman (“Peaceful Home” in Malay) is a non-profit and non-political children’s home providing a caring and loving home for children who are orphaned or from very poor or destitute families in Malaysia.
They do not just provide a roof over their children’s heads; they give them a home and an education, which is at par with the national standard. By doing this, Rumah Aman hopes to break the cycle of reliance and give their children the best opportunities so they may become caring global citizens and contributing members of society.
While they have been registered with the Malaysian Welfare Department since 2006, Rumah Aman covers its operational costs through sponsorship, donation, zakat and sadaqah lillah entrusted by the public.
The foundation is also affiliated with Our Home : Rumah Aman, a charity organisation registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales since the year 2004.
The Origins Of Rumah Aman
Rumah Aman’s story starts with Mr Abdul Rehman Dakri and his wife. They had always had a dream of opening an orphanage after they retired, and they took every step needed towards achieving this wish, finally starting Rumah Aman here in Malaysia. They founded the home in 2005, and started with less than 10 boys. Their first location was in Seksyen 2 Shah Alam. Later they moved their base of operations to Saujana Utama. The home in Shah Alam Seksyen 2 is a children’s home for 19 girls and 4 preschool boys. The headquarters in Saujana Utama is home to 45 boys, currently between 7 to 16 years of age, and also serves as the children’s school. As of March 2018, Rumah Aman is home to almost 70 children.
Mr and Mrs Dakri have completely dedicated themselves to the well-being of the children and will continue to do so for the foresee-able future.
What they do
Rumah Aman strongly believes that children in an orphanage should not be treated any differently from one’s own. They deserve to live in a safe and loving environment with access to food, water, education and support.
Their orphanage doesn’t just help orphaned children but also those in need, on a case by case basis. They make sure that every child in their care gets:
- Clothing
- Proper mentorship
- Academic opportunities & life training skills
- Proper personal hygiene
- A loving home
- Fun
A Special Interview With One Of The Teachers
Rumah Aman is filled with many good people with hearts of gold. Each of them have their own unique story to tell. We met up with one of them and asked a few questions about their time in Rumah Aman.
How long have you worked in Rumah Aman? Is there any moment during your time here that you would like to share with us?
I have been working in Rumah Aman as a teacher since September 2017. For me the most memorable and heartwarming event was when one of the children, who had nothing to his name, made a beautiful teachers’ day card for me.
What are some of your most memorable activities in the past year?
One of the most memorable activities was the night fire drill along with actual fire trucks and firemen. It was late at night and the children were asleep. It was a wonderful experience seeing the children leave the home in an organized fashion, without any injuries.
What made you decide to join this industry?
I started as a volunteer. However, I became a full time staff member later on. I decided to remain in this industry as I had learned many things in my short journey here. Everything I do here is to help the orphans, and it is an honour to be able to serve the underprivileged.
Would you like to share something about the children?
Most of the children we are helping are still with us in Rumah Aman. We strive to guide them until they are able to receive a higher education and be independent once they leave the home. However, they will always be our children.
What Rumah Aman Needs
For Rumah Aman, helping children is not the responsibility of one individual or organization; it is also a responsibility of the community. The children are provided with a place to call home, to sleep, eat, be clothed and receive the best education. Therefore, we welcome financial donations to be channeled to these causes efficiently. Do contact Rumah Aman to find out what they may need at the moment, and to ensure your donation will be 100% beneficial to the children.
